Security personnel in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have intercepted a large quantity of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations aimed at maintaining peace and security in the area.
The operations, conducted on May 17, 2026, led to the retrieval of a total of one thousand rounds of ammunition and the arrest of two suspects currently assisting with investigations.

According to security sources, the first operation involved a night patrol team stationed at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.
During the exercise, officers intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P carrying passengers.
A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered seven hundred and fifty live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes, each packed with 250 rounds of ammunition.
Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Hudu Mahama, aged 53, who was serving as the driver’s mate on the bus.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the ammunition.

In a separate operation on the same day, a joint Police and Military team pursued a motorbike rider suspected of transporting ammunition.
During the chase, a box fell from the suspect’s motorbike, leading to the retrieval of one hundred and twenty-five AA cartridges and one hundred and twenty-five BB cartridges, making a total of two hundred and fifty rounds of ammunition.
The unidentified rider, however, managed to escape from the scene.
Preliminary inspection of the recovered box later led to the arrest of another suspect identified as Christian Kwasi Alonise, aged 57.
Both suspects are currently in custody assisting security agencies with investigations.
The retrieved ammunition has been retained as evidence, while efforts continue to trace and recover a second box allegedly carried away by the fleeing motorbike rider.
Security officials say the Joint Security Team remains committed to restoring and maintaining lasting peace and security within Nkwanta and surrounding communities.
