The Ashanti Regional Police Command has opened an investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Nyinahin on Thursday, April 24, 2025, which left one person dead and three others injured.
According to preliminary reports, the incident took place around 11:00 a.m. when a group of youth from Nyinahin were escorting the body of a friend to the cemetery along the Kumasi–Bibiani Highway. While en route, a military truck transporting personnel stopped after noticing one of the mourners dressed in military camouflage attire.
Eyewitnesses say the military officers approached the mourner and attempted to forcibly strip him of the uniform. A heated confrontation ensued, during which one of the soldiers allegedly shot the mourner in the head at close range. The victim, identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as “Kushivi,” died instantly.
In the chaos that followed, the soldiers reportedly fired multiple shots to disperse the angry crowd, leaving three other mourners with gunshot wounds. All injured individuals were transported to the hospital and are currently responding to treatment.
A police investigative team was promptly dispatched to the scene, where several spent bullet casings were recovered for forensic examination. The deceased has been conveyed to the Nyinahin Community Mortuary, pending autopsy.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has visited the crime scene and the injured victims at the hospital. He assured the affected families and the wider community that a full-scale investigation is underway to uncover the truth and ensure accountability.
The Police Command is also liaising with the Central Military Command to facilitate the release of the soldiers involved for questioning.
Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and support the ongoing investigation to allow justice to take its full course.
