The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with a deadly armed robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Fiapre-Zongo, a suburb of the Sunyani Municipality, which claimed two lives and left three others injured.
According to the police, the attack occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after officers received a distress call reporting an ongoing robbery. Although police responded swiftly, the assailants had fled before they arrived.
Investigators say the robbers targeted 30-year-old Amina Abu, a mobile money vendor, and made away with ¢30,000 in cash.
During the attack, Amina Abu, Khadija Abu, 23, Anifa Tanko, 24,and Ibrahim Osei, 40, sustained gunshot injuries after being hit by pellets.
While searching the area, police also discovered an unidentified man lying behind Ibrahim Osei’s house with severe injuries. A black mask was found beside him, raising suspicions that he may have been connected to the robbery. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish his identity and determine his role in the incident.
All five injured persons were rushed to the Sunyani Regional Teaching Hospital for treatment. However, Ibrahim Osei died shortly after arriving at the hospital, while the unidentified man also succumbed to his injuries.
Police recovered six spent BB cartridge casings from the scene, which have been retained for forensic examination.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the robbery suspects travelled in a cattle truck heading towards Berekum before alighting to carry out the attack.
Acting on the intelligence, police alerted officers at the Twumasikrom checkpoint, leading to the interception of two cattle trucks and the arrest of nine suspects, who are currently assisting with investigations.
The suspects are expected to be processed for court, while police continue efforts to track down other individuals believed to have been involved in the robbery.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command has assured residents that it remains committed to bringing all those responsible to justice and has urged the public to volunteer any information that could assist with ongoing investigations.
