An acute water shortage has hit the Wa west district of the upper west region
The lack of access to potable water has pushed residents to rely on contaminated stream and stagnant water sources.
Areas affected by the acute water shortage in the Wa west district are Charile and ole, in the Eggu electoral area.
Residents say their dependency on contaminated water has exposed them to water-borne illnesses.
Local businesses, including pito brewing are also severely impacted.
Health care service delivery has also been affected by the water shortage.
Health workers say the situation is interfering with the efficient operation of medical facilities.
Five health facilities in the Eggu sub-district of the Ghana health service serve over 6,000 residents.
To help address the challenge, member of parliament for Wa west, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has facilitated the construction of 18 boreholes to supply some of the affected communities.
Two of the 18 boreholes have already been put into use at Charile and ole, both in the Eggu electoral area.
The remaining 16 are under construction.
Wa west constituency chairman for the opposition NDC, Mathew Vaare, expressed delight over the intervention.
