Police Arrest Suspect over ¢430,000 Buipe Cattle Market Robbery

The Savannah Regional Police Command, with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, has arrested a suspect in connection with the robbery of two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market, during which ¢430,000 was stolen.

The robbery occurred on June 29, 2026, prompting the deployment of a specialised team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit by the Inspector-General of Police to support investigations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that four armed men, wielding two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 rifle, attacked the vendors, firing sporadically before escaping with the money.

Following weeks of surveillance, officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, arrested 28-year-old Yacouba Oumar at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23, 2026.

Police say the suspect allegedly admitted to participating in the robbery and named several alleged accomplices. Investigators also allege that the gang was contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market to carry out the attack.

The investigation subsequently led police teams to several locations, including Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, in an operation to trace other suspected members of the gang.

Police say an exchange of fire occurred during the operation, resulting in the deaths of three suspects: Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu. Their bodies have been deposited at the morgue pending preservation, identification and autopsy.

Officers recovered a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun, which police believe may have been used in the robbery.

Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest the alleged mastermind, Alhaji Yacouba, also known by several aliases, and other persons suspected to be connected to the robbery.
