Hidden Cache of 1,400 Rounds of Ammunition Discovered at Mechanic Workshop in Bolgatanga

A routine clean-up at a mechanic workshop in Bolgatanga has led to the shocking discovery of 1,400 rounds of ammunition concealed in fertilizer sacks inside a hen coop, triggering a major police investigation in the Upper East Region.

According to the Upper East Regional Police Command, the ammunition was uncovered on May 9, 2026, after an auto mechanic reported suspicious items found by his apprentice while sweeping the workshop premises near the Assemblies of God Church in Bolgatanga.

Police officers who responded to the scene retrieved two sealed packets containing 7.62×39mm ammunition — the type commonly used in assault rifles. Each packet contained 700 rounds, bringing the total to 1,400 rounds of live ammunition.

The recovered exhibits have since been secured by the police for evidential purposes as investigations intensify to trace the source and intended destination of the ammunition.

The discovery has heightened security concerns in the region amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to clamp down on illegal arms and ammunition circulation.
