
The Weija Divisional Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old man, Isaac Adonteng, after his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng, was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at the Police Hospital. Preliminary inquiries indicate the child suffered severe physical assaults at the hands of her father.
The Accra Regional Police Command says investigations are underway following the death of 13-year-old Celestine Adonteng at a family home in Kokrobite.
Police say preliminary findings show the victim was physically assaulted with a cane, a metal pipe and other objects after being accused of taking food belonging to a younger sibling. Despite sustaining multiple injuries, Celestine was allegedly kept confined in a room and did not receive medical care.
Acting on a complaint, officers attended the residence and found the girl unconscious. She was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is currently at the Police Hospital morgue pending preservation and autopsy.
The suspect, identified as Isaac Adonteng, a 54-year-old mason, has been arrested and is assisting investigators. Items recovered at the scene, including a cutlass and a metal pipe, have been retained as exhibits.
The Accra Regional Police Command issued a stern warning to parents and guardians about the unlawful use of excessive force in disciplining children, stressing that such conduct can lead to tragic outcomes and criminal liability.
The statement, signed by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit superintendent, Juliana Obeng, appeals to members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and domestic violence promptly to enable swift intervention and protect vulnerable victims.
