Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nationwide “Thank You Tour” following a violent incident in the Bantama Constituency that left a KNUST student critically injured.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 29, during a stop on the tour led by national executives of the NPP in Kumasi. According to eyewitness accounts, chaos broke out after Maxi, a car dealer and known supporter of Kennedy Agyapong, threw cash to a group of Unity Hall students from KNUST who had come to support him.

Shortly after, a group of heavily built men, allegedly brought to the venue by Ali Suraj — a well-known supporter of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, attempted to seize the money, resulting in a violent confrontation. During the altercation, a student was stabbed and is now being prepared for emergency surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Kennedy Agyapong and members of his team remained at the hospital late into the night to ensure the victim received urgent medical attention. In response to the attack, Kennedy has formally withdrawn from the tour.

A member of Agyapong’s team, George Sarpong, confirmed the decision in an interview.

Kennedy has since filed an official complaint at the Bantama Police Station, calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. His team has also announced a press conference in Kumasi to address the issue publicly.

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has condemned the violence in a statement posted on his official Facebook page.

“Disturbing reports and images from the NPP ‘Thank You Tour’ have come to my attention. I have directed a full investigation into the incident that left a KNUST student critically injured. We urge the NPP leadership to ensure the tour is conducted peacefully to safeguard the security of our beloved region,” he stated.

The incident has cast a shadow over the NPP’s nationwide gratitude campaign and raised concerns over rising tensions and factionalism within the party.
