Police arrest three over disruption of NPP constituency election in Obuasi

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the disruption of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Executive Election at Bidieso in Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, Haruna Iddrisu, also known as Dole, Osei Boateng, alias Nana Osei, and Charles Opoku, alias Blackman, are alleged to have stormed the polling station on July 12, 2026, armed with offensive weapons.

According to the police, the suspects scattered ballot boxes and threatened election officials and voters, disrupting the electoral process before a police reinforcement team intervened.

The police said the three suspects were arrested at the scene, and an axe and a cutlass were retrieved during the operation.

The suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on charges of conspiracy to commit crime, namely rioting with weapons, and rioting with weapons.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were each granted bail of ₵50,000 with two justified sureties.

The case has been adjourned to August 10, 2026, while police continue investigations and pursue other suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.
