Western Region: Six Arrested Over Fatal Shooting at Mining Site in Gwira Ampansie

The Western Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a fatal shooting incident at a mining site at Gwira Ampansie in the Nzema East District of the Western Region.

The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Angu Mensah, who was the Abusuapanyin of Gwira Ampansie, was allegedly shot during a misunderstanding at the mining site.

The suspects include three Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals. They have been identified as Hamza Abubakar, 36; Hamidu Seidu, 42; Francis Biewose, 26; Bai Yaozheng, 36; Liu Gang, 43; and Wen Xien Wen, 45.

According to the Police, officers at Axim received a distress call on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m., reporting a shooting incident at the site.

A police team, together with officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, proceeded to the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 11:45 a.m., a misunderstanding broke out between the deceased and some individuals at the mining site.

Police say during the confrontation, a suspect identified as Alfred Sadick, also known as “Strongman,” allegedly shot Angu Mensah in the chest.

The six suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest the alleged shooter, who remains on the run.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Police Command is appealing to the public to volunteer any credible information regarding the whereabouts of Alfred Sadick alias “Strongman” to assist in his arrest.
