The alleged mastermind behind the robbery and murder at the Buipe Cattle Market in the Savannah Region has died during a police operation.
Briefing the media in Accra on Monday, September 7, 2026, the Inspector General of Police identified the suspect as 60-year-old Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu.
Police allege that the trader contracted armed robbers and supplied them with weapons to target people carrying large sums of money to the market.
The case dates back to 29 June 2026, when two mobile money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market were attacked and robbed of ¢430,000.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of 28-year-old Yacouba Oumar, with police recovering a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun allegedly linked to the robbery.
On 5 September 2026, the Police Intelligence Directorate received information on the whereabouts of Alhaji Imoro Beliko and placed him under surveillance at the cattle market.
According to the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the suspect attempted to escape during the operation and was shot. He later died from his injuries.
The Police say intelligence operations have since been intensified in the area to protect traders and other community members.
The development comes amid a wider police crackdown on suspected armed robbery networks across the country.
