Missing UCC Student Found Dead After Body Washes Ashore at Cape Coast Beach

The Cape Coast District Police Command has identified the young woman whose body was found washed ashore at Hutchland Beach as 20-year-old Innocentia Avinu, a second-year student of the University of Cape Coast.

The tragic discovery was made on Friday, June 12, 2026, prompting police to appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the deceased.

According to police, family members later came forward and, together with officials from the university and law enforcement officers, visited the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary where they officially confirmed her identity.

A preliminary examination of the body, conducted in the presence of the family, reportedly found no immediate signs of physical assault.

Investigators from the Central Regional Crime Scene Unit have since processed the scene at Hutchland Beach as part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

The body remains at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities have informed both the management and student body of the University of Cape Coast, while investigations continue into the incident.

Police say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
