UCC Student Murder: Police Arrest 39-Year-Old Suspect in Cape Coast

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of 20-year-old University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

The suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.

According to preliminary investigations, Michael Mensah, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m.

Police investigations indicate that he subsequently took her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.

The arrest comes days after the body of the Level 200 UCC student was discovered washed ashore at Hutchland Beach, sparking widespread concern within the university community and beyond.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing and has assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case progresses.

The development follows the earlier deployment of a special investigative team by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to support efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
