Fake ‘Veep’s Aide’ Busted: Visa Scam Kingpin Arrested with 10 Passports in Cape Coast

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested a notorious fraud suspect who allegedly posed as a staff member of the Vice President’s Office, a Captain in the Ghana Armed Forces, and an affiliate of the Canadian Embassy to defraud unsuspecting victims seeking travel opportunities abroad.

On 16th February 2026, the Abura Police Station in Cape Coast received a complaint that a man identifying himself as Dr Patrick Nelson Ayittey had, between December 2025 and January 2026, collected sums of 5,325 cedis and 8,200 cedis from victims under the false pretext of securing Canadian visas and work permits.

Police intelligence led to his arrest at a hideout in Abura, Cape Coast. A search conducted at the suspect’s residence uncovered about ten Ghanaian passports, alongside school certificates, birth certificates, and Ghana Cards believed to belong to victims.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect is neither a medical doctor, a Captain in the Ghana Armed Forces, nor an employee of the Vice President’s Office, and has no affiliation with the Canadian Embassy. His real name was later established as Patrick Nii Torto, contrary to the identity he presented to victims and investigators.

Patrick Nii Torto, aka Dr Patrick Nelson Ayittey, was later arraigned before the Cape Coast Circuit Court, presided over by Nana Aba Quiaba Nunoo, and was remanded into police custody to assist ongoing investigations into similar fraud cases. He is expected to reappear in court on 03rd March 2026.

Police are urging members of the public, especially persons who may have been defrauded by the suspect, to contact the Ghana Police Service through emergency lines 18555 or 191 as investigations continue.

The case serves as a strong warning against visa fraud and highlights the need for the public to verify claims involving the Office of the Vice President of Ghana, the Ghana Armed Forces, or foreign diplomatic missions.
