The Ghana Police Service has completed investigations into an alleged assault involving the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and has referred the docket to the Office of the Attorney General (AG)for further action.
According to police findings, the case stems from a 1-minute, 13-second video that surfaced in May 2025, appearing to show the Minority Leader striking a police officer during a public protest.
Following the video’s circulation, the Police Service secured and analyzed the footage, initiating a formal investigation.
Preliminary inquiries confirmed that an altercation had occurred and that a police officer, who was performing lawful duty, was indeed assaulted.
On May 6, 2025, the assaulted officer lodged a formal complaint and provided a statement to investigators.
He was issued a Police Medical Form to document any injuries sustained and undergo medical examination.
In a counter-complaint filed on the same date, Afenyo-Markin alleged that he, rather, was the one assaulted by the police officer.
The Police accepted his statement and those of his two witnesses, Sammi Awuku and Richard Ahiagba, as part of the investigation process.
To ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, investigators requested CCTV footage from both the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the National Signal Bureau (NSB).
However, after reviewing all available video evidence, the investigation found no proof to support Afenyo-Markin’s counter-allegation of assault by the officer.
The Minority Leader was issued a medical form to undertake an independent examination, but according to the Police, he has not submitted the completed formand remains unresponsive to repeated follow-up requests.
With all available evidence assessed, the Ghana Police Service concluded thatAfenyo-Markin assaulted the police officer on duty.
The case docket was formally forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office in June 2025for advice and possible prosecution.
The matter now rests with the Attorney General’s Department, and the public awaits an official statement on the status and next steps regarding the case.
