In a related development, the CID has made significant progress in a robbery case involving a taxi driver, Mr. Vic Martin Obeng, which occurred on 1st January 2025.
Briefing the media, the Director General of CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said Vic Obeng was operating his ash-and-yellow Toyota Corolla taxi (GM 296-16) when he picked up three young men at Madina Zongo Junction headed to Haatso. As they approached the ICGC Church area, the suspects attacked the driver, covered his face with his shirt, tied him up, and forced him onto the backseat floor.
They took over the vehicle and robbed him of his day’s earnings, a mobile phone, and 13,000 cedis in mobile money before abandoning him near Westland.
Following a formal complaint, CID operatives launched an intelligence-led investigation. On 30th July 2025, police arrested Vincent Gbetorglo at the Accra Mall. A search revealed the victim’s stolen mobile phone along with three others. Gbetorglo claimed he had bought the phones at Kwame Nkrumah Circle but could not assist the police in locating the alleged seller.
Further checks revealed that Gbetorglo is an ex-convict previously sentenced in 2011 to 40 years’ imprisonment by the Cocoa Affairs Court 1. He was released in 2023 after a successful appeal.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, and police are intensifying efforts to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the Madina robbery.
