Four Arrested Over Murder of Couple in Zebilla District

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a juvenile, in connection with the murder of a couple at Kusanaba, a community in the Zebilla District of the Upper East Region.

The suspects, identified as Safianu Salam, Awal Salam, Jawal Salam, and the juvenile whose name has been withheld, were arrested at their hideout at Kugre near Garu on June 19, 2026.

According to preliminary police investigations, the incident occurred on June 10, 2026, when the victims, 45-year-old Apam Azubilla and his 35-year-old wife, Apam Anomsigna, were in their room when four armed men allegedly stormed the residence, attacked them, and opened fire.

Police say Apam Azubilla managed to shout for help during the attack. His brother, Ayubugre Apam, who heard the distress call, rushed to the room and found the couple lying in pools of blood.

The victims were immediately rushed for medical attention. Apam Anomsigna was pronounced dead on arrival at the Zegoyire Health Centre, while Apam Azubilla was referred to the Zebilla District Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead on arrival.

A police examination of the bodies revealed gunshot wounds.

Family members later handed over three spent AK-47 ammunition shells recovered from the scene to investigators.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.

The police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killings are ongoing.
