Marine Protected Areas Safeguard More Than Ecology – They Bring Economic Benefits to Fisheries and Tourism.Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been used as a conservation measure for decades, but critics continue to argue that evidence of their economic benefits is weak, particularly about fisheries. Given the challenges in establishing MPAs, including objections from fisheries and the frequently small size and sub-optimal location of protected areas, one would expect their economic benefits to be hard to detect.Learn MoreHow AI is Being Used to Prevent Illegal FishingLate last year, the Spanish government fined 25 Spanish-flagged fishing ships that had been operating near Argentina’s territorial waters. The financial penalties were imposed because the vessels had illegally turned off the GPS-based automatic identification systems (AIS), which were transmitting their positions. This is often a sign that a vessel is engaged in illegal fishing. “It’s estimated that illegal or unregulated fishing is as much as 20% of what’s caught,” says David Kroodsma, head of the research team at Global Fishing Watch. Good Fisheries Management is Good Carbon Management.Climate change is causing persistent, widespread, and significant impacts on marine ecosystems which are predicted to interact and intensify. Overfishing and associated habitat degradation have put many fish populations and marine ecosystems at risk and are making the ocean more vulnerable to climate change and less capable of buffering against its effects.
