The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba Chapter (UTAG-UEW), has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the gruesome murder of one of its members, Professor Mawuadem Koku Amedcker. His body was discovered buried at his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba.
In a statement released by the Association, UTAG-UEW described the news as “devastating” and said the entire academic community at UEW—and indeed, the nation—has been shaken by the tragedy.

“This heartbreaking incident has not only robbed us of a respected scholar but has left a painful void in our community,” the statement read. “We extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family, his students, colleagues, and the broader UEW fraternity. We share in their grief during this extremely difficult time.”
UTAG-UEW expressed appreciation to UTAG National and the National Executive Council (NEC) for their solidarity and support during this trying period. The Association also commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift response and the arrest of one suspect so far, while calling for intensified efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.

“We strongly urge the police to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that every individual connected to this heinous act is arrested and prosecuted. Justice must be swift and uncompromising,” the statement urged.
UTAG-UEW further emphasized its readiness to support the ongoing investigations in any way necessary to ensure accountability and affirm the safety of Ghana’s academic institutions.

“This tragic loss underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures—not only within the University of Education, Winneba, but across academic institutions and Effutu communities at large.”
The Association called on all relevant stakeholders, including the government, security agencies, and university authorities, to collaborate and implement concrete measures that guarantee the safety and well-being of all staff and students.
“May the soul of our dear colleague and friend rest in perfect peace. UTAG-UEW will continue to honour his legacy by standing for truth, justice, and the ideals he upheld throughout his service to academia and to Ghana,” the statement concluded.
