The Airport Divisional Police Command has arrested 52 suspected motor riders and impounded 71 motorcycles during a special operation targeting illegal motorcycle racing along the George Walker Bush Highway near Villaggio in Accra.
The operation, carried out on July 26, 2026, followed intelligence that riders from different parts of the country had converged at the location to engage in unlawful motorcycle racing and other dangerous activities.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects include riders from Accra as well as others believed to have travelled from Nsawam, Kasoa, Tema, Ashaiman, and Koforidua.
The Command said the riders’ activities posed a serious threat to motorists and pedestrians while causing significant inconvenience to road users.
During the operation, Police impounded 71 motorcycles, comprising:
- 25 registered Royal motorcycles
- 26 unregistered Royal motorcycles
- 5 power bikes
- 15 scooters
The suspects are expected to face charges including careless and inconsiderate riding, dangerous riding, unlawful motorcycle racing, failure to wear protective crash helmets, riding without a valid licence, operating unregistered motorcycles, failure to obtain compulsory motor insurance, and other related road traffic offences.
Police say the suspects remain in custody assisting with investigations and will be processed before the courts. Investigators are also working to determine whether they may have been involved in other traffic-related offences.
The Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws and ensuring the safety of all road users. It urged the public to comply with traffic regulations and report illegal road activities to the nearest police station or through the Police emergency numbers.
