The Okada Riders Association has welcomed the passage of the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, 2025, which legalises the commercial use of motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles across the country.
Parliament approved the bill on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The new law is expected to enhance road safety, create jobs for the youth, and offer comprehensive regulation of the road transport industry.
It also introduces a higher limit for determining alcohol concentration in drivers as part of broader measures aimed at reducing drink-driving and related accidents.
Reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association, Solomon Akpenaba, said the move would help streamline operations and improve the image of commercial riders.
“The riders were operating without unions and even without uniforms. However, the government then announced that it would put these people in uniform and regularise them. From now on, we will be upgrading our services.
“You can easily identify those who are Okada riders and those who are not, even by just looking at our registration number plate. So, by 2026, the robbers who operate with motorbikes, and then we all get blamed, will come to an end, and people will know that we are all not one,” he said.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, December 10, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, said the amendment is designed to sanitise road transport services, strengthen safety protocols, and introduce stricter penalties for offenders.
