The north east regional security council has scaled up security measures aimed at protecting travellers on the Bolga-Walewale-trans-ECOWAS highway.
three persons have reportedly been shot dead by unknown armed men within seven days in separate armed attacks on travellers on the highway.
four major attacks occurred at different locations on the Bolga-Walewale highway within the first week of the new year.
The first incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, January 1, when a bus with registration number ac 393-22 from Bawku in the upper east region was ambushed by suspected armed robbers at Sayoo, near Walewale township.
The police reportedly foiled the attack but angry residents attacked the suspected armed robbers and lynched two.
The second attack reportedly occurred on January 4, when a mobile money vendor was attacked by armed men on motorbikes who robbed him of a huge amount of money in Walewale township.
On Thursday January 5, between the hours of 9 and 10 pm, a cargo car loaded with cattle from Bawku in the upper east region to Accra was attacked on the Tamale-Walewale stretch of the road.
A sixteen-year-old passenger, Alhassan Ibrahim, was shot dead by the suspected armed robbers.
The fourth attack reportedly occurred on the night of January 7, again on the Tamale-Bolga road at Kokabla.
The suspected armed men opened fire on a KIA bus, registered ap 262-22, from Kumasi.
The situation has sparked fear and panic among travellers and people within the area.
Various groups including commuters, community leaders, youth and associations have been reacting to the situation, calling on the state security agencies to intervene.
Meanwhile the northeast and upper east regional security councils have been holding meetings on ways to protect lives and property on the highway as travellers are stranded at various Bus terminals for fear of the deadly attacked.
