The National Democratic Congress (NDC) asserts that the Akufo-Addo administration has miserably failed to combat unlawful mining (galamsey).
The party sees the government’s actions and strategies to combat galamsey as a blatant fraud.
Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the NDC, stated at a news conference held at the NDC headquarters in Accra that some members of the NPP and government are responsible for galamsey in Ghana.
“The so-called fight against galamsey by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government is a scam and has been a lost battle from day one. This is because, there has never been any genuine commitment or political will on the part of the President to combat the menace.”
He accused the president of being a leader who specializes in words without corresponding actions.
Sammy Gyamfi criticized the president and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor for passing the burden of failed galamsey fight to the chieftaincy institution.
He further adds that the president holds a trust over the nation’s mineral resources on behalf of the populace. Therefore, he has the primary obligation for ensuring that the nation’s mining and mineral laws are followed and that those who break them are prosecuted. More crucially, only he has the authority to appoint individuals who engage in unlawful mining and to fire them. He has failed in his resolve to fight the menace for his inability to exercise this power.
