Some traders at the Gbintiri livestock market in the east Mamprusi district of the North East region, are appealing for investment to improve trade.
The traders say the present cost of living couple with lack of infrastructure are having a heavy toll on their businesses and livelihood.
The Gbintiri livestock market is the largest in the north east region.
Located in the east Mamprusi district, the Gbintiri livestock market stocks and breeds all kinds of livestock, and is held every six days.
Sheep, goats, poultry, pigs, cattle and many others are commonplace even on non-market days.
Thousands of traders and buyers patronize the market to trade in goods and livestock.
This makes the Gbintiri livestock market a major revenue source for the east Mamprusi district assembly.
Unfortunately, the market lacks the needed infrastructure.
Most of the activities in the market are therefore done in the open and at the mercy of the weather.
But what is more, is the present high cost of living.
The traders say they now have to spend more than threefold on movement of goods and services yet patronage has declined greatly.
Again, the absence of fence walls and electricity has exposed the market animals to theft.
The North East regional director of Agriculture Abednego Abosore, confirmed the challenges being faced in the livestock market.
According to him, the leadership of the market have appealed through his outfit to the district assembly but those concerns were yet to be responded to.
