A new pressure group has emerged against the bad governance of the Akufo Addo/Bawumia government.

Arise Ghana is a coalition of Civil Society Organisations, with membership from various political parties; including the ruling NPP, the media, driver unions among other stakeholders. The aim of the coalition is to champion a common course of liberating Ghanaians from what it termed oppressive rules, provide a voice for the voiceless and seek reforms that will bring about the needed change in the socio-economic, politico-social and general well-being of the citizenry.

At their inaugural conference on Wednesday, May 25, the group highlighted issues it deemed critical and of political and socio-economic importance to Ghana.

A spokesperson for the coalition, Mordecai Thiom Biano, noted, remaining silence over the present state of affairs means encouraging the continuous slide of the country into the abyss. He maintained, choosing not to speak about the current bad and incompetent governance means being complicit in the ongoing state capture and the sacrifice of the collective future on the altar of instant gratification.

Various speakers touched on the continuous increases in fuel prices, harsh economic conditions, the introduction of several draconian taxes like the obnoxious E-levy, corruption and the abuse of the public purse. The coalition wondered the rational for government to intend re-introduce Agyapa deal through parliament and vowed to resist with all its strength.

“We are however mortified to note that despite the public outcry over this deal, the NPP/Akufo-Addo government is headstrong and is seeking to reintroduce the “Agyapa” deal as recently announced by the Finance Minister. We wish to serve notice that this latest attempt to reintroduce the unpopular “Agyapa” Mineral Royalties deal shall be defeated, as we shall resist same with everything within us.”
