The Ghana Police Service says it has rescued a 30-year-old man, Bismarck Amo, and arrested four suspects in connection with an alleged kidnapping, torture and extortion syndicate.
The operation, code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators,” was launched after the victim’s family reported the case to the Regional CID in Assin Fosu on September 8, 2026.
According to the Police, Amo was allegedly lured from Assin Fosu to Kumasi after one of the suspects accused him of defrauding her of an unspecified amount of money.
Police say the victim was subsequently kidnapped and held at a private residence in Kumasi between September 6 and 11, where he was allegedly subjected to severe torture.
The suspects allegedly demanded ¢45,000 from the victim’s family and had already received ¢19,500 through mobile money transfers before the Police intervened.
Police say the suspects also allegedly sent videos of the abuse to the victim’s family while making further demands for money and threatening to kill him if their demands were not met.
The four suspects arrested are:
- Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School;
- Charles Doku, 53, a security guard;
- Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician; and
- Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias “Culture,” also a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School.
All four are residents of Breman UGC and are currently assisting Police with investigations.
According to the Police, the suspects attempted to move Amo to another location on September 11 after apparently realising that investigators were closing in.
Tactical teams intercepted the vehicle during the transfer and rescued the victim, who Police say was found severely injured and in need of urgent medical attention.
Amo was subsequently taken to a medical facility, where he remains on admission under police protection.
The Police say they are also pursuing a senior military officer, identified as the husband of one of the suspects, who is currently outside the country, as well as other alleged accomplices who remain at large.
The four arrested suspects are being processed for court.
The Ghana Police Service has warned that financial disputes or alleged fraud do not justify kidnapping, torture or extortion, stressing that individuals must not take the law into their own hands.
The Police say investigations are continuing and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
