The Ghana Police Service says it has made breakthroughs in its fight against organised armed robbery, following weeks of intelligence-led operations across several regions.
At the centre of the briefing is the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok, who police say is suspected of murdering the missing couple, Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Elizabeth Amuah Esi.
The couple was reported missing in April 2026. Police say investigations eventually led to the recovery of their mortal remains, which were preserved and subjected to autopsy.
According to the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, investigations established that Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, allegedly murdered them before taking their mobile phones, money and private vehicle.
The suspect subsequently travelled to the United Arab Emirates and was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice.
He was deported from Dubai to Ghana on 30 August 2026 by investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
Police say Awundok admitted to the murder during interrogation and remains in custody as investigations continue.
The IGP also announced a series of operations targeting suspected robbery networks in Greater Accra, Western, Ashanti, Northern and Savannah Regions.
Among the key developments:
- Three suspects have been arrested over robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.
- Five suspects were arrested in connection with a robbery gang operating around Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave. One suspect died during the operation.
- Police recovered three AK-47 rifles, five magazines and 357 rounds of ammunition, among other exhibits, in that operation.
- A suspected gang leader and other suspects have been arrested over a robbery incident on the Enyiresi-Sekyere road, with a pump-action gun and other weapons recovered.
- Police also announced the arrest of five suspects allegedly involved in weapons trading, with eight AK-47 rifles, one SMG rifle and two foreign pistols recovered.
The Police Service says intelligence operations have been intensified as it continues its crackdown on criminal networks and illegal weapons.
The IGP has urged the public to provide information on suspected criminals through the nearest police station or the Police Emergency Line 191.
