Police Bust Illegal Mining Operation Near Cape Coast Water Pipeline; Three Arrested, Equipment Torched

The Central Regional Police Command has conducted a special operation at an illegal mining site at Effutu near Cape Coast, following a petition from the Ghana Water Company Limited over activities along its main pipeline.

The operation, carried out on 8th June 2026 at about 8:00 a.m., led to the arrest of three suspects while several others fled the scene on sighting the police.

The arrested suspects are Eugene Oppong, aged 28, Paul Kumash, aged 30, and Amos Beyuo, aged 25.

A number of equipment used for the illegal mining activities were retrieved at the site, including 19 water pumping machines, four washing carpets, seven cutlasses, and a wheelbarrow.

Other equipment that could not be moved were immobilised and set ablaze by the police to prevent further use.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while all retrieved items have been retained for evidential purposes.

The case remains under investigation.
