The long-standing boxing rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria came alive at the Accra Sports Stadium, as amateur fighters from both countries traded punches in an international friendly ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

While Nigeria dominated the women’s division, Ghana’s Black Bombers delivered an impressive performance in the men’s category, delighting fans and sports officials in a night filled with energy, pride, and West African boxing excellence.

The healthy boxing rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria was reignited on Thursday night at the Accra Sports Stadium, where amateur fighters from both countries battled in an international friendly ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The event, organized by the Ghana Boxing Federation with support from the Ghana Olympic Committee and the National Sports Authority, brought together top amateur boxers in an atmosphere charged with excitement and national pride.

While Nigeria dominated the female category, Ghana’s Black Bombers proved superior in the men’s division, winning all but one of their bouts.

In the women’s contests, Ghana’s Ramatu Quaye lost five-nil to Nigeria’s Kadijat Ajisola in the bantamweight division, while Nancy Bamfo narrowly suffered a two-three defeat against Aishat Gbadamosi in the featherweight category.

However, the Black Bombers responded strongly in the men’s competition. Amadu Mohammed secured a convincing five-nil victory over Michael Ogunremi in the bantamweight division, while Ebenezer Ankrah also recorded a dominant five-nil win against Sodiq Oduniyi in the lightweight contest.

Veteran boxer Abdul Wahid Omar edged Abdul Rahman Abdul Wahab three-two in the light welterweight division, while Desmond Pappoe showcased his strength and skill to defeat Daniel Joshua four-one in the light heavyweight category.

Only Khalid Abdul fell short for Ghana in the light middleweight division after losing narrowly to Folly Hassan of Nigeria.

Officials from both countries praised the event as an important step in strengthening sporting ties and preparing athletes for future international competitions.

President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Dauda Fuseni, described the encounter as a major boost for boxing relations between the two countries, while National Sports Authority Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, commended the impressive turnout and spirit of competition.

The boxing night attracted several dignitaries from Ghana and Nigeria, highlighting the growing commitment to developing amateur boxing in West Africa.
