The Ghana Police Service has closed the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack on the facility by some youth of the town.

The incident occurred on 21st September 2025, at about 7:00 a.m., when a group of young men stormed the station and nearby barracks, pelting them with stones, clubs, and other implements. They also attempted to set the building on fire. The unrest followed the death of Bright Kena, alias D-bail, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing and was receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital before his passing.

A police reinforcement team was deployed to the scene and managed to restore calm.

The Eastern Regional Police Command has since met with the deceased’s family and community leaders, assuring them of a thorough investigation. The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have begun inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

Video footage of the attack is under review to identify those involved, who will be arrested and prosecuted.

The Command is urging residents to resolve grievances through lawful and peaceful means rather than resorting to violence, which endangers lives and undermines security.
