Efforts to resolve concerns raised by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) took a positive turn following a high-level meeting held on Tuesday, June 11, 2025, with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The meeting, convened in Accra, brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the leadership of teaching hospitals, and executives of MOWAG. The primary focus of discussions was the resolution of outstanding allowances owed to mortuary workers across the country.

Speaking at the meeting, Chief Executive of the FWSC, Dr. George Smith-Graham, acknowledged the legitimacy of the workers’ concerns and pledged to work closely with the relevant ministries and agencies to address the issues.
“We are committed to finding practical solutions and ensuring that mortuary workers are treated fairly within the public sector pay structure,” Dr. Smith-Graham assured.

On his part, MOWAG President Richard Kofi Jordan urged the FWSC and its partners to act on their commitments to forestall any potential industrial action.
“We believe in dialogue, not disruption. But our patience must not be mistaken for weakness. We expect urgent action,” Jordan stated.

He reaffirmed the association’s dedication to peaceful engagement but stressed that members would not hesitate to escalate matters if delays persist.
The meeting ended with a consensus to fast-track negotiations and maintain open lines of communication as steps are taken to resolve the grievances.
