What is the source of the EC’s Mathematical challenges in declaring results? – Prof Gyampo quizzes

Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has lambasted the Electoral Commission for their lack of accuracy in computing and declaring election results.

He was appalled that the Commission kept making mathematical errors which he believes can dampen the trust people repose in election results declared by the EC.

This comes after the Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Quaicoe incorrectly announced 91% instead of the correct 61% for the flagbearer-elect, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“I still do not understand the causes of the mathematical mistakes of the Electoral Commission in declaring results. Can’t the EC be accurate in the declaration of results? The last time in 2020, they corrected themselves more than 5 times in declaring the election results,” Prof. Gyampo said.

He added that “yesterday too, they announced 91% instead of 61%. They could also not do a simple computation of percentages of votes for the rest of the candidates. This is unprecedented.”

He thus charged the EC to be clear in telling the public about the percentage of votes garnered by all aspirants.

According to Prof. Gyampo, this important task cannot be left to individual computations.

The lecturer stated that “Institutions must transcend individuals!” adding that institutions must work to perfect themselves over time.
