Val’s Day Highway Disaster: Police Battle to Restore Calm After Deadly Tanker Explosion at Ntoaso

Police are working to restore normalcy after a fatal motor accident involving a fuel tanker triggered a fiery explosion on the Suhum–Nsawam Highway, leaving multiple vehicles destroyed and lives lost.

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Ntoaso, along the Accra–Suhum dual carriageway. Preliminary police investigations indicate that a fuel tanker transporting petrol from Tema to Kumasi lost control upon reaching the stretch, resulting in a massive blast. The tanker ruptured, causing fuel to spill and ignite vehicles trailing behind it.

In all, six vehicles and four motorcycles were completely burnt in the inferno. Police at the scene discovered two unidentified male bodies that were charred beyond recognition, as well as an additional unidentified body inside one of the burnt vehicles.

Four other victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries from the explosion were rescued and rushed to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service stations at Suhum and Nsawam were swiftly deployed and are currently working to fully douse the fire and prevent further spread.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has begun visits to surrounding hospitals in an effort to identify the victims. Police are also overseeing the removal of the burnt vehicles from the highway to ease congestion and restore traffic flow.

Motorists using the Suhum–Nsawam stretch have been advised to reduce speed and strictly comply with police directives to avoid secondary accidents as emergency operations continue.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
