The Tema Regional Police Command has retrieved an AK-47 assault rifle abandoned by two unidentified individuals near the Tema General Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday, July 24, 2025, during a routine patrol. According to initial investigations, officers on patrol duty observed suspicious activity involving a motorbike parked close to the hospital. As the police team approached, the suspects fled the scene, leaving behind a sack which, upon inspection, was found to contain the loaded assault rifle.

The weapon has since been secured as evidence, and police say efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspects.

The incident has sparked public debate on social media. While some users praised the swift police response, others raised questions about the rifle’s origin, suggesting the need for better tracking of firearms and enhanced investigative tools like fingerprint scanning. Some commenters also urged the police to consider more thorough room-to-room searches to uncover hidden weapons.

The Tema Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to pursue the suspects and ensure public safety.
