The proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex at Meduma in the Kwabre East Municipality has been arrested for allegedly preventing two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from taking part in a paper due to non-payment of registration fees.

The arrest of Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong was effected on Monday, 17th June 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m. by the Kwabre East Municipal Director of Education, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, and the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate, Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane. He was subsequently handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command.

According to preliminary investigations, Sarpong is alleged to have unlawfully confined two Junior High School students in a separate room at the examination centre on 16th June 2025, thereby preventing them from writing the Mathematics paper during the national BECE exams.

The incident, which has been classified as assault by imprisonment, has sparked widespread concern among education stakeholders and the general public. The affected students were reportedly released only after the examination had ended.

The police have begun a formal investigation into the matter and assured that due legal process will be followed.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has yet to issue a formal statement, but local authorities say measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
