The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects for the unlawful possession of a large cache of AK-47 ammunition following an intelligence-led operation at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, after police intercepted a Kia Granbird bus (GT 5771-18) travelling from Accra to Walewale en route to Paga.
A detailed search of the vehicle uncovered two concealed containers holding a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. Further inspection led to the discovery of a bag hidden under the driver’s seat containing two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bus and all retrieved exhibits have been impounded. Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to disrupting the illegal movement of weapons and ensuring public safety across the country.
