“Man Nabbed with Ammo-Stuffed Talisman Smock, Military Gear and Drugs in Ashanti South”

The Ashanti South Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Yussif Mohammed, for unlawful possession of a staggering 207 rounds of assorted ammunition, military uniforms, suspected Indian hemp, and other suspicious items, including a smock embedded with talismans.

Yussif was apprehended near the Asankare Police Barrier after a tip-off from informants. According to the Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, the suspect was on board an Accra-bound passenger bus when his backpack, reportedly stuffed with the contraband, accidentally fell off the vehicle.

The attention of the officers on duty nearby was drawn to the bag. Upon questioning, the 25-year-old admitted it belonged to him. A search uncovered an alarming cache of items, ACP Arthur revealed during a press briefing on Monday.

The seized items included:

  • 2 empty CZ pistol magazines
  • 1 empty G3 rifle magazine
  • 2 loaded G3 magazines with 8 rounds each
  • 1 round of BB ammunition
  • 35 rounds of CZ ammunition
  • 42 rounds of AK-47 ammunition
  • 16 rounds of redheaded G3 ammunition
  • A quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp
  • A bulletproof vest
  • Two black jackets, one green jacket, and a crash helmet
  • Two sets of military uniforms
  • A traditional smock reportedly modified with charms and talismans

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s motives, possible affiliations, and intended use of the items.

The arrest raises fresh concerns about the circulation of military paraphernalia and ammunition in civilian spaces and the potential threat they pose to national security.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to face multiple charges, including unlawful possession of ammunition, narcotics, and military accoutrements.
