Police Foil Highway Robbery Plot: Intelligence-Led Operation Uncovers Assault Weapons in Bono Region

The Ghana Police Service in the Bono Region has announced a major breakthrough in its sustained fight against armed robbery and organised crime, after an intelligence-led operation foiled a planned attack on traders.

Addressing the media at a press conference at the Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Police Commander, Joshua Copson, disclosed that police recovered five assault weapons and a large cache of ammunition from a notorious robbery gang.

According to the Commander, on 11th February 2026, police intelligence picked up credible information that an armed gang was planning to attack traders travelling along the Dormaa Gono–Krom Highway. Surveillance teams were immediately deployed to the area to thwart the intended robbery.

In the early hours of 12th February 2026, officers advancing toward a parked motorbike reportedly came under gunfire from suspects hiding in nearby bushes. Police returned fire.

At daybreak, a search of the area led to the discovery of one male suspect, believed to be a member of the gang, found dead with an AK-47 rifle beside him.

A further sweep of the scene uncovered several items, including additional firearms and ammunition, a dagger, a mobile phone, a motorbike, a black mask, and talismans believed to have been used by the gang.

Police say the body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

DCOP Joshua Copson assured residents that the stretch of road where the incident occurred is currently safe, stressing that no robbery incident has been recorded there since the operation. However, he cautioned that criminal groups are dynamic and may attempt to relocate when security pressure is intensified.

He added that efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining members of the gang, as the Police Command intensifies intelligence-led operations to safeguard lives and property across the Bono Region.
