Police Arrest Seven Suspects in Highway Robbery Involving Council of State Member

A coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service has led to the arrest of seven suspects linked to a daring highway robbery involving a Member of the Council of State, uncovering a criminal network spanning armed robbery, weapons possession, and stolen electronic devices.

The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery attack on a Member of the Council of State along the Tamale–Buipe Highway.

The suspects, Rashida Yusif, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, Wilson Avasong, Muntaru Iddrisu (alias Virgin), Aminu Zebrilla (alias Birdman), Inusah Sumaila (alias Agenda), and Haruna Safiano, are believed to be part of a criminal syndicate responsible for the attack.

The incident occurred on July 21, 2025, when the victim was travelling along the Tamale–Buipe Highway and was ambushed by six armed men. The attackers robbed him of mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop, and other personal belongings.

Following months of intelligence gathering, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on January 11, 2026, deployed a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to Salaga in the Savannah Region. The operation led to the arrest of Rashida Yusif, who was found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus traced to one of the victims. The device was retrieved.

Further investigations led officers to a mobile phone shop at Dagomba Line in Salaga, where the shop attendant, Aaron Abana Baswiefanga, was arrested. He disclosed that the phone had been brought to the shop by his uncle, Wilson Avasong, an environmental officer and owner of the shop, who resides in Tamale. Wilson Avasong was subsequently arrested in Tamale.

During interrogation, Wilson Avasong told police he bought the phone for ¢1,000 from a phone repairer, Muntaru Iddrisu, popularly known as Virgin. Muntaru was arrested at the Tamale Aboabo Market and later led police to Aminu Zebrilla, alias Birdman, a 35-year-old okada rider, at Dungu, a suburb of Tamale. Aminu admitted to selling the phone to Muntaru for ¢650.

A search conducted in Aminu Zebrilla’s room yielded several items, including locally manufactured firearms, live ammunition, edged weapons, assorted mobile phones, wristwatches, pen drives, SIM cards, a motorbike, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Police further revealed that Aminu Zebrilla is an ex-convict who was previously convicted for robbery in 2012.

Two additional accomplices, Inusah Sumaila (alias Agenda), aged 42, and Haruna Safiano, aged 32, were later arrested from their hideouts behind the Tamale China Mall.

Police say investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects believed to be on the run and to retrieve a firearm believed to still be in the possession of the gang.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring safety along major highways.
