A military operation in Bawku and Bazua on Sunday, July 13, 2025, has left significant destruction in its wake, including the pulling down of the statue of Bawku Naba Asigiri Abugrago Azoka II.
The reasons behind the military’s actions remain unclear, as authorities have yet to release an official explanation. The extent of property damage and potential casualties is still being assessed.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the raid came in response to two separate attacks on commercial buses—one on Saturday at Nangode and another on Sunday along the Bawku-Bolga highway, despite military escort.

Eyewitness accounts allege that after the second incident, the military moved into Bawku and Bazua, destroying property, firing bullets and assaulting civilians. Tragically, a young woman reportedly lost her life after her shop was vandalised during the chaos.
The incident has raised new fears among residents, prompting the municipal assembly to order the temporary closure of all offices on Monday. In response, angry youth have blocked major roads, burning tyres and demanding answers.

This is not the first time the military has been accused of turning on communities they were deployed to protect. Earlier this year, a similar incident nearly sparked a declaration of war against security forces by local youth, only calmed by police intervention and high-level mediation.
The military high command is yet to comment on Sunday’s events, leaving communities anxious and awaiting clarity on what led to the escalation.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
