The former president John Dramani Mahama has repeated claims that the government is in bed with the Electoral Commission and other institutions to advance their parochial political interest to the detriment of a national course.
He said that the EC, which is supposed to make it easy for people to participate in a democratic process, especially elections, takes delight in making it an arduous ordeal. He sighted examples of an alleged attempt by the EC to disenfranchise sections of Ghanaians from voting in 2024 with misguided insistence on using the Ghana Card as the sole identity, knowing very well that not everyone has access to it.
The former president thinks the Ghana card should be integrated into society’s entire life. However, he posited that until full coverage is achieved in the card roll-out, the room must be allowed for those yet to receive their Ghana Card to exercise their democratic voting right. John Mahama further contended that many legitimate and time-tested forms of identification that identify who a Ghanaian is.
He adds that political parties and relevant stakeholders must have equal access to monitoring all the electoral processes in real-time to avoid fraud, exploitation and undue advantage by any political party.
