The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Armah Kofi Buah, has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Ghana Police Service for their critical role in the ongoing fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

Delivering his remarks at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, 2025, the Minister praised the IGP for his unwavering commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and water bodies. He noted that the collaborative efforts between the Police and other security agencies have significantly pushed back illegal mining operations across the country.

Over the past two months, the Ghana Police Service, under the directive of the IGP, has conducted high-impact anti-galamsey operations in multiple regions. In Samreboi and nearby communities, a special Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has seized over 100 excavators, bulldozers, weapons, and Chanfang machines. Several suspects have been arrested and are currently undergoing legal processes.

Similar enforcement actions have been carried out in the Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, and Upper West regions.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to intensifying these operations and working closely with stakeholders to protect the country’s water bodies, forests, and mineral wealth from unlawful exploitation.
