The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a violent armed robbery incident along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division, which claimed the life of a police officer on active duty.
Preliminary police findings indicate that on Sunday, 8 February 2026, two police officers travelling toward Zebilla inadvertently ran into an armed robbery in progress. Upon spotting the officers, the suspected robbers opened fire, striking one of the officers during the exchange.

Following a distress call, a reinforcement team was immediately dispatched to the scene. The injured officer was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency medical attention. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The remains of the deceased officer have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted as part of ongoing investigations.
In response to the attack, the Police Command has activated a special security operation across the area aimed at tracking down and arresting all individuals connected to the robbery and fatal shooting. Police say the perpetrators will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
The incident has heightened security concerns along the Zebilla–Widnaba corridor, a stretch increasingly affected by criminal activity. The Police Command has assured residents that intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations are underway to restore safety and prevent further attacks.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to volunteer credible information that could assist in the swift arrest of the suspects, stressing that cooperation with law enforcement is critical in combating violent crime in the region.
