The national youth boxing team, the Black Rockets, who made headlines at the 2025 Africa Youth Amateur Boxing Championship in Conakry, Guinea, are set to return home to a hero’s welcome.
The team, led by head coach Joseph Martey, will arrive in Accra tomorrow, Monday, May 27, 2025, via ASKY Airlines at 1:25 p.m.
The Black Rockets etched their names in the annals of Ghana’s sporting history after an impressive showing that saw them secure three gold medals at the continental tournament. The victories signal a strong resurgence in youth boxing and highlight the country’s immense potential in amateur boxing on the African stage.
Among the standout performers was Desmond Pappoe, who clinched Ghana’s third gold medal by knocking out South Africa’s Mighty Sangoni in the second round of their Middleweight (75kg) final. He joined Mathias Ashitey (Flyweight – 51kg) and George Dowouna (Bantamweight – 54kg), who also secured gold in their respective divisions earlier in the competition.

Coach Joseph Martey, whose strategic guidance and motivational leadership have been widely praised, is returning with the team after what many have described as a “golden chapter” in Ghana’s youth boxing journey.
Officials from the Ghana Boxing Federation, sports enthusiasts, and family members are expected to throng Kotoka International Airport to receive the team upon arrival. The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Authority (NSA) have all lauded the team’s performance and hinted at plans for a formal reception in the coming days.
The Black Rockets’ triumph is being hailed not only as a sporting success but also as a source of inspiration for young athletes across the country. Their medals reaffirm Ghana’s status as a rising force in African boxing and a breeding ground for future global champions.
More updates to follow upon their arrival.
