The Ghana Police Service and the Nigeria Police Force have renewed their commitment to intensifying joint efforts in combating human trafficking and transnational crimes across West Africa.

This follows a high-level bilateral meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, on Friday, November 7, 2025, co-chaired by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) of the Nigeria Police Force, Sadiq I. Abubakar, mni, PhD.

The meeting brought together senior officials from law enforcement, immigration, intelligence, and diplomatic institutions from both countries to discuss new trends in human trafficking and its growing connection with cyber-enabled crimes.

DIG Abubakar commended Ghana’s CID Director-General for her initiative in proposing the meeting during the INTERPOL Africa Regional Conference earlier this year in South Africa, describing the collaboration as a vital step toward regional security and human protection.

COP Donkor, in her remarks, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian authorities for their partnership and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to intelligence sharing, joint operations, and coordinated enforcement actions.

Both sides agreed to:

  • Establish a Joint Task Force (JTF) to investigate and prosecute cross-border trafficking cases.
  • Appoint focal officers to enhance real-time information exchange.
  • Develop standard protocols for victim repatriation and referral.
  • Launch joint awareness campaigns targeting youth and border communities.
  • Convene a high-level meeting of West African Police Chiefs to harmonise regional anti-trafficking strategies.

The session concluded with the signing of a communiqué reaffirming the shared commitment of Ghana and Nigeria to dismantle trafficking networks, protect victims, and sustain bilateral cooperation under the frameworks of ECOWAS and INTERPOL.
