Franklin Cudjoe, the president of IMANI Africa, has stated that there is justification for calls to remove Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), and her deputy, Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.
This follows demands for the resignation of the EC chairpersons made by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the chairman of the National Democratic Congress.
On Saturday, June 28, he made the case on Channel One TV’s “The Big Issue” that the EC has not upheld accountability and openness under its current leadership, particularly in how it has handled the most recent elections.
In particular, he takes issue with the disenfranchisement of citizens in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) districts, who were denied what he sees as their right to vote in the 2020 parliamentary elections, and he criticized the Commission for excessive spending in previous electoral exercises.
IMANI has already petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) against the EC’s actions, Cudjoe disclosed, although he clarified that he will not personally submit a petition for their removal.
He emphasized that the problems affect the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions and extend beyond partisan politics.
“Everybody knows my position on this. I am not talking about the high-handedness of SALL, as for that one, if I add it, their sins will be worse. I will not cry for them, but I hope that it is done properly and that there are no faceless petitioners.
“I will never petition because everybody knows my position. We have petitioned the CHRAJ already on this matter, and I think they are working on it to see what they can do concerning some of these things, not necessarily their removal but to just prove that they were high-handed, evasive and somehow complicit in our financial woes,” he said.
