After months of dangerous deployments across some of Ghana’s most volatile areas, the elite police team known as “Black Maria” has finally returned home.
From the mining conflicts of the Western Region to security operations deep in the northern savannah, the officers have been at the frontlines of some of the country’s toughest policing assignments.

Now, as the team arrived in Accra from Tamalethey were met with heartfelt praise from Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police, who commended their courage, sacrifice and dedication to duty.
The arrival of the “Black Maria” team marked the end of months of demanding operations carried out across several regions of the country.

The officers had been deployed to help contain security threats and restore calm in difficult terrains, including remote mining areas and communities facing rising crime.
Welcoming them back, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, praised the team for their resilience and discipline, noting that their work had made a significant difference.

He reminded them that special teams are formed to respond to urgent situations, stabilize communities and then move on to the next assignment when the mission is accomplished.
According to the Police Chief, the team’s withdrawal from the northern operations was strategic, allowing another group to continue the work and ensure security efforts remain uninterrupted.

Despite calls from some communities for the team to remain, the IGP said their success meant it was time for them to leave while their impact was still widely appreciated.
Recognizing the personal sacrifices made by the officers, many of whom had spent months away from their families, the Police Chief granted them a week’s leave to reconnect with loved ones before their next deployment.

He also paid special tribute to the female officers who served alongside their male counterparts in difficult operational environments.
The IGP described them as role models whose courage is helping transform the Ghana Police Service into a more operational and inclusive force.

For the officers themselves, the recognition was deeply appreciated.
A team representative, Detective Chief Inspector M.K. Osei, thanked the police administration for the support and motivation that sustained them during their mission, assuring the leadership that they would continue to serve with dedication.

As the team takes a brief break before their next assignment, their mission stands as a reminder of the sacrifices security personnel make daily to protect communities across the country.
