The Police have restored calm at Gordenu near Hohoe in the Volta Region following a violent disturbance in which a Police patrol vehicle which was involved in an accident with a motorbike rider was set on fire by some members of the community.
Two people lost their lives in the violence and the motor rider who sustained injury during the accident is currently receiving medical attention.
Twelve people have so far been arrested and one Bruni pistol retrieved.
Police continue investigation into the incident including the circumstances under which the two people lost their lives.
Security has since been deepened in Hohoe township and its surrounding communities to ensure law and order.
However, the community eyewitnesses account is variant to the police report.
According to local journalist, Obed Dzewuda, who spoke to Onuatv, the police allegedly opened fire on residents, in an attempted to arrest a man suspected be carrying Indian hemp from his farm.
The incident reportedly left three persons dead and several others injured.
The alleged drug suspect had earlier escaped into one of the houses in the village on his motor bike, prompting the police to begin shooting indiscriminately, resulting in the death of three residents and injuring several others.
The police were alleged to have also burnt all motorbikes on sight, vandalized many homes including the chief’s residence.
