When a 57-year-old stepped into the boxing ring to challenge a 27-year-old undefeated heavyweight boxer, the scene was set for an extraordinary event, brimming with unexpected sights and sounds.
Amidst the mix of attendees, which included African-American guests and esteemed corporate executives, two unfamiliar faces stood out – former Black Stars midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari, and the son of former President John Dramani Mahama.
While the focal point of the evening was the bi-monthly Ghana Professional Boxing League taking place at the Bukom Boxing Arena, this novelty boxing fundraiser added an unconventional twist to the evening’s entertainment.
The DG Hathramani Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium played host to this unique charity event, attracting a select group of boxing enthusiasts.
Among them were Ghanaian residents who had journeyed to Accra to celebrate the 2023 Homowo Festival, as well as tourists, particularly African-Americans, keen on experiencing the local culture.
Among the diverse crowd, several unexpected personalities emerged, ones rarely seen at boxing events. Catching the attention of many was the former Ghanaian international football midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari.
Seated nearby was the son of former President Mahama, accompanied by the son of the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah. Notably, banking executives and alumni of Adisadel College, united to support one of their own, Sulemana Abubakar, on his unconventional journey.
As the evening unfolded, it became evident that this charity match was more than just a boxing event.
It was a testament to the power of unity, unconventional partnerships, and the willingness of individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together for a worthy cause.
Amidst the cheers and excitement of the boxing match, a spirit of collaboration and shared purpose pervaded the atmosphere, reminding all that remarkable things can happen when people rally behind a common goal.
