It was a welcome news when GBA President,Abraham Kotei Neequaye upon returning from the WBO 38th convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico assured Ghanaians the likelihood of Isaac Dogboe going to fight for his second World title to become a 2-time world champion.
When Emmanuel Navarrete decided to vacate the featherweight division after winning a super featherweight title,the WBO featherweight title automatically became vacant and Isaac Dogboe who is the number one on the WBO ranking had the opportunity to rewrite his name on another world title for the second time.
Isaac Dogboe who fought 5 crucial fights at the featherweight division and won all,was self inspired and developed self- confidence in his ability to become a world champion for the second time barring any unforeseeable circumstances.
It was a great and much anticipated information for Team Dogboe and Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) when World Boxing Organization (WBO) officially penciled down April 1st,2023 as the date for the vacant WBO Featherweight title fight between Isaac Dogboe from Ghana and Cuban opponent Robeisy Ramirez number two on the ranking.
The two pugilists brought to the pre-fight analysis table credible and durable signifiers to confirm that the moment both boxers are waiting for is approaching and they are ready to live up to the billing.
Isaac Dogboe was touted by many Boxing pandit as the favourite due to his experience and changes in technical team and tactical dispositions ever since he moved weight from 122(Super Batamweight to 126(Featherweight).
Before the last Saturday fight in Oklahoma,USA, Isaac Dogboe’s official record of 24-2(15) justified his credibility and ability to trade bunches with the unassuming Robeisy Ramirez, 2-time Olympic gold medalist with an official record of 11-1 (7) and likely to win.
Isaac Dogboe had an excellent preparation ahead of last Saturday bout with a press conference in Ghana to seek support from Ghanaians and consolidate the working relationship between his team and the media.
It was a welcome news when Isaac Dogboe moved camp to the Headbangers Gym in the Bald Eagle Recreation Centre in Washington DC under the technical and tactical tutorials of Barry Hunter and Patrice Harris.
In my fight analysis ahead of the last Saturday fight in Oklahoma,I have indicated that the fight would be determined by tactical dispositions underpinned by ring generalship,effective and accurate landed punches,pure aggression and effective defence.
I was on the same wavelength with many boxing pandits in Ghana and across the globe who concluded after critical analysis of the two boxers that Isaac Dogboe would triumph over Robeisy Ramirez based on experience,track record and quality of opponents they both fought before.
In real boxing analysis,height and reach might not always be appropriate signifiers to apply in looking for verifiable information on the performances of boxers.
However,tactically gifted and intelligent boxers can use their height and reach advantage to strategically change their game plan instatenously to the disadvantage of their opponents regardless.
Both Isaac Dogboe and Robeisy Ramirez were technically on point considering their body language,demeanor,jabs,
punches and footwork but TACTICALLY,Robeisy Ramirez’s corner neutralized Isaac Dogboe’s corner and succeeded in their game plan.
Robeisy Ramirez strategically allow Dogboe to bring forward his game plan in every single round.So you realised that Dogboe at a point was the aggressor of the two boxers but never landed much punches compare to Ramirez who gets into his groove at the tail end of every round(50 seconds) with effective landed punches to tactically accumulate points and convinced the Judges as the best for the round.
Let me now navigate you through my observation on all the 12 rounds for your own analysis and interpretation:
In the first round, Robeisy Ramirez started the fight with a left upper cuts to the body of Dogboe who was very active and fought with speed.Second round saw Robeisy Ramirez landed some accurate combinations on Dogboe who went into clinching.
In round three, Ramirez outlanded Dogboe until at the final seconds when Dogboe landed accurate and effective punches.In the fourth round, Dogboe started with some extra energy landing right hooks and left upper cuts.
In the fifth round Dogboe pressed Ramirez effectively but tactically he(Ramirez)counted well in the last seconds.Round six started on a fast note with both Dogboe and Ramirez aggressively traded punches before Ramirez took over.
Round seven saw Dogboe as usual started on a very fast note enough to win the round by outlanding Ramirez.In the eighth round Dogboe throws more jabs but landed less.
In round nine,Ramirez has the best round landing with accuracy,precision and effectively countering Dogboe’s jabs at will.In round ten,Ramirez replicated what he did in round nine and again outlanded Dogboe who was trying to reposition himself but not to the clinical work of Ramirez.
Round eleven saw Dogboe in a more effective way of fighting and slightly landed some few effective punches.Round twelve was undoubtedly the determining round and a left glancing upper cut from Ramirez on the chin of Dogboe and down the canvas he went of an 8 count from Referee Gary Ritter.Very subjective knockdown.Many saw a slip.
The 3 Judges scored the bout by a unanimous points decision(UPD) as follow: 117-110,118-109,119-108 in favour of the 2-time gold medalist for Cuba who exhibited real boxing dexterity,effective maneuvering and tactical movements.
Robeisy Ramirez was crowned with the new WBO featherweight championship title after a final knockdown of Isaac Dogboe in the 12th round to sealed dominant points win.
Analytically and mathematically,it was a close fight open to any of the two boxers before round 12 and the more tactical boxer capitalised on his game plan and emerged as the winner.
Isaac Dogboe has cleverly admitted his flaws and blemishes,requested for a refight and sincerely apologised to his Trainers,Barry Hunter and Patrice Harris and Ghanaians as a whole.
